Bangladesh finds record 786 virus cases a day

Bangladesh on Tuesday detected the highest number of 786 new cases of coronavirus in a day and registered one more death from the disease COVID-19.

During the period between 8am of Monday and 8am of Tuesday, 193 patients were also recovered.
With that, the number of total cases rose to 10,929 with 183 deaths and 1,403 recoveries since the first cases were detected on March 8 in Bangladesh.

Additional Director General for Health Prof Nasima Sultana giving those updates in the regular virtual briefing said they had tested 5,711 samples in 33 RT-PCR labs across Bangladesh during the period.

New testing labs at Chattogram Medical College Hospital and Sheikh Hasina Medical College in Jamalpur would start soon.Tuesday’s detection was the highest in the last week as it was 13.76 percent of the total samples tested for the virus.
On Monday, it was 10.99 percent, Sunday 12.30 percent, Saturday 9.48 percent, Friday 10.24 percent, Thursday 11.36 percent, and last Wednesday it was 12.90 percent.

So far, 93,405 samples have been tested.
The World Health Organisation declared the virus pandemic on March 11.
As of Tuesday, the global death toll reached 252,393. According to worldometer data, 3,645,320 cases have so far been confirmed globally since the virus was first reported in China in December last year.

So far, 922,581 people have recovered. Of those infected, 2,144,722 are currently being treated and 49,635 of them are in serious or critical condition.

Bangladesh confirmed the first coronavirus death on March 18.
Over 40 percent of the total deaths were among the patients aged above 60 years while nearly 30 percent was between 51 years and 60 years. The disease also killed people below 10 years.

The only death recorded in the last 24 hours was a man, aged between 21 years and 30 years.
The additional director general said a number of policemen have died from the virus.
She also mentioned the death of another doctor from the virus.

Colonel (retd) Prof Dr Moniruzzaman is the second physician died of COVID-19 in Bangladesh. He was a hematologist working at Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital. The viral infection was detected after his death on Sunday.

Dhaka city and Narayanaganj remained the top contributor of the infection in Bangladesh.
The government on Monday extended general holidays further until May 16.

However, the government allowed businesspeople to keep shops and shopping malls open from 10am to 4pm every day maintaining health guidelines during the general holidays extended until May 16 considering Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

The public transport services remained suspended till May 16. People have been asked not to travel to their villages during the Eid this year.

In the past 24 hours, 128 people have been taken to isolation while 2,477 to home and institutional quarantine, Prof Nasima said.
