While addressing the National Film Awards-2022 ceremony, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the film artistes, directors and technicians should make quality movies to keep pace with global standard.

Our cinemas surely can earn foreign recognition crossing the country’s frontier if artistes, directors, technicians and producers have advanced trainings. Only then they can make quality movies using the talents they have.

Different national dailies and news agencies on Wednesday detailed Sheikh Hasina’s speech. The film showcases a very authentic story about the saga of real people. Sometimes, the fantasy film also takes us away into an imaginary world.

In fact our film industry has been passing through a critical juncture due to various reasons. Considering the issue seriously, the government has taken step to protect the industry.

As our film makers failed to make quality films, people do not go to the cinemas halls for watching movies. Besides, vulgar movies have also discouraged the movie-goers to visit cinemas in the last two decades. Such barren period of the film industry should end immediately as it is one of the oldest media in Bangladesh.

Most owners have closed down their cinemas. Many people who were the employees of cinemas became jobless. As a result, directors, producers, actors, actress, technicians and other people engaged in film making also became unemployed. Many of them are passing in inhuman lives.

film showcases a very

 authentic story about

 the saga of real people

Since the 1960s our film industry had seen a glorious period when we saw people waiting to watch a movie with family and friends, because it was that kind of film they would love to see together in the cinema halls. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, understanding the impact of films on society, tabled a bill in the provincial assembly of the erstwhile East Pakistan for the formation of Film Development Corporation (FDC) in 1957 and in continuation to that, the FDC was established.

A film portrays the history of people, their lifestyle, and their tales of sorrows and happiness.Films play an outstanding role in depicting the life of people and their (people) thoughts. But, the fact is that many cinemas across the country were closed as the mass people had stopped going to cinemas.

We need to protect the film industry for the sake of cinemas also. Apart from film artistes, directors and technicians, all stakeholders including concerned ministries, play writers, song writers, singers and music directors also have to work together to restore the golden era of our film industry for healthy cultural practices in the country.People think movie is the mirror of society and it talks about their lives and stories. Although the government has taken various initiatives, including construction of a new building with modern equipments and technologies at FDC, for the development of the film industry, it is still a challenge to bring back the golden era of country’s film industry and capture the global cinema market.

However, the government plans to turn Bangabandhu Film City in Gazipur into world-class spot within the shortest possible time. Only then we believe good movies will be produced in Bangladesh and some of them will receive international awards and accolades too.

In this regard, Bangladesh Film Certification Bill, 2023 was passed in the Parliament last month aiming for development and protecting the creativity of the film industries. The proposed law will replace the Censorship of Films Act, 1963.

According to the objective of the bill, it will be protecting, developing, preserving, family and social values of the domestic film industry, the spirit of the Liberation War, independence, integrity, sovereignty, creativity of the film industry as well as the overall development of the film industry, and will provide film certification and fair screening of certified films.

We believe all concerned including producers, film directors, actors and actresses will take our film industry to a new height.
