Bangladesh cricketers need to change mindset

Published : 24 May 2025 08:58 PM

The recent, rather shambolic setback for Bangladesh cricket team, at the hands of the United Arab Emirates no less, has undeniably torn open a veritable chasm, revealing the grim realities confronting the team. While it's understandable that a side undergoing transformation can't always deliver immediate triumphs, the alarming absence of a discernible upward trajectory is deeply unsettling.

Without it, Bangladeshi cricket faces the distinct peril of plummeting into a disheartening spiral of constant disappointments – a fate the nation's ardent followers surely don't deserve.

With numerous seasoned professionals now absent from the national setup, the entire burden has unambiguously fallen upon the current group of cricketers to carry the load. The lone speck of brilliance in an otherwise forgettable series against the UAE was Parvez Hossain Emon’s hundred in the initial contest – a rare instance of individual flair amidst a collective struggle.

Emon, a raw talent long tipped for greatness, displayed glimpses of the forceful hitting he’s exhibited since his days in the under-15 ranks. His recent performances in the Dhaka Premier League certainly hint at an evolving comprehension of how to construct an innings, and it’s precisely this progression that desperately needs nurturing at the top level. As the refrain 'Emon this DPL' implies, the raw ability is undeniably present. He has proven his capacity to amass runs against local opposition; now, the truly enormous undertaking of replicating that against formidable international bowling attacks commences.

The very nature of international cricket has undergone a monumental shift over the last two decades. The expectations placed on figures like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal when they burst onto the scene were fundamentally different from those confronting today's hopeful Tigers. Patience, while a commendable trait in squad construction, must be coupled with unyielding resolve. The current unit, still adjusting to their role as the "primary players," needs to be instilled with unshakeable self-belief, liberated from the grip of apprehension and indecision. Their junior days are firmly behind them; it’s now imperative they fully embrace the duties that accompany representing their homeland. As one former Bangladeshi opening batter shrewdly observed, international cricket is an unforgiving arena, and this generation requires ample time to genuinely find their rhythm.

The esteemed generation comprising Tamim, Mushfiqur, and Shakib undoubtedly benefited from a robust framework of mentors and coaches who fostered their advancement as a unified collective. Today, the responsibility unequivocally rests with the current team management to ensure continuous player development. The presence of seasoned individuals like Mohammad Salahuddin, with his profound grasp of players' mental and psychological landscapes, is a significant positive. His insights and counsel will prove absolutely indispensable as the squad navigates these tumultuous currents.

For burgeoning talents like Emon, self-assurance forms the cornerstone upon which a consistent international career can be built. The impending series against Pakistan will, without a doubt, present a formidable examination, but it also offers an invaluable chance to learn – an opportunity to pinpoint areas for enhancement and refine their technique. Emon, with his intrinsic confidence and the steady form he's showcased for Abahani, appears to be on a promising trajectory. While setbacks are an unavoidable part of the game, his current trajectory suggests he possesses the resilience to persevere and mature into a pivotal figure for Bangladesh in the coming years. Ultimately, the destiny of Bangladeshi cricket hinges on how effectively these emerging talents are guided and empowered to truly flourish.
