The Bangladesh government on Thursday requested the Myanmar authorities to fully implement the interim measures declared by the International Court of Justice.

The measures were determined by the court in order to create an environment conducive to full and sustainable repatriation of the displaced Rohingya people.

“Bangladesh is focused on a voluntary, full and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya people with dignity,” foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen said at a discussion on Thursday evening.

“The implementation of the ICJ ruling would be a good step toward creating a conducive environment for the repatriation,” he said.
He was giving his views at a discussion on the ICJ ruling that prescribed provisional measures in the Rohingya genocide case.
The Centre for Genocide Studies of Dhaka University organised the discussion at a city hotel.

The foreign secretary also urged the international community to remain engaged to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
North South University senior fellow M Shahidul Haque, also the immediate-past foreign secretary, said that the ICJ ruling was, in effect, a recognition of the identity of the Rohingya people as a distinct ethnic community.

Describing the ICJ ruling as a ‘big verdict,’ he said that it would have a long-term impact on the state behaviour as the court did not differentiate between the military and civil authorities of Myanmar.

Myanmar was treated as a state, he said. The international community is collectively responsible to ‘impose upon Myanmar’ for ensuring the full implementation of the ICJ ruling on the interim measures, said Phedra Moon Morris, head of development assistance at the Canadian High Commission.

She also stressed the need for creating space for the investigating and humanitarian organisations to have access to Rakhine.
CGS director Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, Bangladesh Enterprise Institute president Faruque Sobhan, security analyst Shakhawat Hossain and foreign ministry director general Nahida Sobhan, among others, spoke.
