Bangladesh again top contributor to UN Peacekeeping Mission

Bangladesh once again contributed the largest number of troops to the United Nations peacekeeping missions, said an Inter Services Public Relations Directorate press release on Saturday.

A total of 6,731 Bangladesh personnel are now stationed in different the UN peacekeeping operations.

United Nations Peacekeeping figures show as of August some 5943 troops, 644 police, 115 staff officers and 29 UN military experts on mission are now deployed worldwide.

Bangladesh is followed by Africa’s Rwanda (6662) and Ethiopia (6322) while other South Asian countries, Nepal, India and Pakistan came  at third (5682), fourth (5353) and fifth (4440) positions.

Currently, a total of 81,820 personnel from 119 countries remain deployed in 13 UN peacekeeping missions across the world.

In 1988, Bangladesh first sent uniformed personnel the UN peacekeeping mission to help monitor the armistice between Iran and Iraq. 

Bangladeshi peacekeepers are currently deployed in eight missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Western Sahara, Mali, Central African Republic, Yemen and Lebanon.

Bangladesh was the largest contributor to peacekeeping missions in 2011, 2014 and 2015, the second largest in 2012, 2012, 2013, 2017 and 2018, the third largest in 2019 and the fourth largest in 2016.

Meanwhile, the ISPR, in another handout, said Major General Md Main Ullah Chowdhury of Bangladesh Army, was made the Deputy Force Commander of the United Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan.
