Bangladesh is the third most peaceful country in South Asia, according to the Global Peace Index (GPI).
As per the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an international research institute based in Sydney, Australia, Bangladesh is six steps ahead in the GPI. Last year, Bangladesh was ranked 97th in the list and this year it is ranked 91st. The IEP released the 97-page report on Thursday (June 17).
According to report, Bangladesh ranks third among the South Asian countries in the index as a result of six steps improvement in the whole world. Sri Lanka has been left behind. The Sri Lanka is currently ranked 95th and fourth in South Asia, 19 steps behind last year.
As per the report, Iceland tops the IEP index. It is followed by New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal and Slovenia.
Each year, the IEP determines the index based on the security, safety, economic situation and steps taken to build a peaceful society for citizens of 163 countries and territories around the world. And this year the list is based on the three criteria of security and safety, ongoing conflict and militarisation.
India has improved two steps in the list. They are now ranked 135th and fifth in South Asia. Pakistan has also improved. They are currently ranked 150th in two-step development and sixth in South Asia.
War-torn Afghanistan is at the bottom of the Global Peace Index-2021 with the rank of 163. Bhutan tops the list of peaceful countries in South Asia and 22nd in the world. Nepal is ranked 85th in the world.
