Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Int’l Airport to be built near Dhaka

Iswardi airport to be upgraded to int’l standard

The government plans to construct a state-of-the-art new airport of international standard named, 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport' around Dhaka.

The government has taken this decision following the increasing demand for national as well as international flights.

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mahbub Ali made the remarks in response to a question from Nuruzzaman Biswas, a Member of Parliament from Pabna-4 constituency in Parliament on Sunday. Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the session. In this regard, Mahbub Ali said that the government has a plan to build a new state-of-the-art airport of an international standard called 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport' around Dhaka to meet the increasing demand.

In reply to another question, he said that the government has plans to reopen Ishwardi Airport after renovations. A total of 436.65 acres of land has been acquired for Ishwardi Airport. Of this, 290.74 acres have been handed over to the army.

“The remaining 145.91 acres of land under the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) includes terminal building, runway, taxiway, navigation equipment, communication equipment and other facilities including a residential area for officials and employees and airport access road,” said Mahbub Ali.

The state minister further said that the government has a plan to renovate and reopen the Ishwardi Airport after handing over the land to the military and the land occupied by the military construction company in favor of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh. 

In response to another question asked by Pankaj Nath, Member of Parliament for Barisal-4 constituency, whether the government has any plans to upgrade the Barisal airport to international standards, the state minister replied, “The Barisal airport is suitable for operating flights. The airport has other facilities including runway, taxiway, terminal building and 50,000 square feet apron.” 

CAAB has taken various steps to raise the standard of service of the airport to international standards. Eosin Hiring, an international consulting firm, has completed a feasibility study and prepared a master plan for a detailed feasibility study, drawing-design, master plan and cost estimation for the modernization of the airport.
