Bangabandhu’s portraits vandalised, 4 arrested

Police arrested general secretary of Tungipara upazila Chhatra League Khokon Sheikh and three others in two cases filed over vandalising portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and residences of rivals.

According to the case statement and local sources, there was a dispute between Khokon Sheikh and Israfil Kha of Guhardanga village under Tungipara upazila in Gopalganj over business money.

Khokon humiliated Israfil’s father Hanif Kha on Friday afternoon when he requested Khokon to reconcile with Israfil. Later, Khokon attacked on Hanif Kha while he was going to the house of upazila Awami League General Secretary Babul Sheikh for settling the dispute. During this time, he also vandalised Israfil’s house along with his gang. 

After that, Khokon and his gang vandalised Babul Sheikh's residence around noon. They destroyed Bangabandhu’s portraits displayed in the Bangabandhu corner set in front of Babul Sheikh’s office and injured Babul Sheikh with local weapons.

Babul’s brother Iqbal Sheikh filed a case against Kokon and 11 others in this connection with Tungipara Police Station. On the other hand, Hanif Kha also filed a case against Khokon for vandalising their residence.

However, the relatives of Khokon Sheikh told this reporter that Khokon was a victim of dirty politics. He could never vandalize the pictures of Bangabandhu. 

Officer-in-Charge of Tungipara Police Station AFM Nasim said that there were two separate cases in the name of the accused. Four of them were arrested. The arrestees are identified as Khokon Sheikh, 35, Shafiq Sheikh,37, Jewel Sharif, 28, and Jamal Kha, 32. They were sent to the court on Friday midnight and sent to jail afterwards.

Among others, Tungipara Upazila AL unit's president Sheikh Abul Bashar Khayer, Municipal Mayor Sheikh Ahmed Hossain Mirza and former Municipal Mayor Elias Hossain Sardar protested the incident and demanded punishment of those responsible.
