Bangabandhu killer Muslem Uddin arrested

Law enforcement agencies are verifying Indian media reports of arresting another self-confessed killer of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Earlier, a leading Indian media outlet carried out a report claiming that Muslem Uddin, a convicted killer of Bangabandhu, was arrested in India.

The Bangladesh Post communicated several officials of various intelligence agencies. They denied to make any comment over the reported arrest. They said as they are still verifying the identity of the arrestee, it is not proper time for comment.Some senior police officials also refused to comment over the issue terming the issue as highly sensitive.

However, on condition of anonymity, they hinted that one Bangladeshi citizen named Muslem Uddin was arrested in India. “As the matter is still premature, I cannot tell you details about it”, a top police officer who deal with the extradition procedure told this correspondent. According to an unverified sources, convicted killer Muslem Uddin was traced as per information unearthed from recently executed Bangabandhu’s killer Abdul Majed, a dismissed captain of Bangladesh Army.

Intelligences heavily grilled Majed immediately after his arrest. Muslem Uddin was also living in West Bengal over the years using fake documents. A team of Bangladeshi intelligence has already reached India to verify the identity of arrested Muslem Uddin. They are currently grilling him in association with Indian intelligences, the sources further claimed.

After the verification is completed, law enforcement agencies will disclose the arrest of Muslem Uddin. It may require a week, the sources claimed. About the Indian media reports,Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told that he was also aware of such a report. But he refused to tell details saying that the law enforcement agencies are still verifying the matter.

According to a report of AnandabazarPatrika, a leading Indian Bengali daily,Bangladeshi intelligence agents received leads on Muslem Uddin after interrogating Majed. Later, they forwarded the information to their Indian counterparts. Bangladeshi intelligence also informed Indian intelligence that it would be tough to arrest and repatriate him due to the ongoing coronavirus shutdown.

Later, the Indian intelligence practically hounded Muslem Uddin before handing him over to Bangladesh through the border, the media report said. Moslem Uddin was living in a suburb in North 24 Parganas district, disguised as a Unani doctor.  He was at the forefront of the massacre on Aug 15, 1975 and is believed to have been the one who shot Bangabandhu.

Muslem Uddin is one of the five remaining convicts at large along with Abdur Rashid, SharifulHaqueDalim, M Rashed Chowdhury and SHMB Noor Chowdhury.
