Bangabandhu killer Majed hanged

Justice served after many years

The assailant of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family, dismissed Army Captain Abdul Majed was hanged in Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital. Justice has been finally served after nearly 45 years. 

Extra security measures were taken for the execution in order to prevent miscreants from causing trouble. On November 19 in 2009, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentences of Majed and 11 other self-confessed killers of Bangabandhu. In 2010, five of them were executed in Dhaka Central Jail. Six other convicts including Majed remained at large. In June 2001, another condemned killer died in Zimbabwe.

Majed had fled the country in 1996 general election brought Awami League back to power under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership which vowed to bring to justice Bangabandhu’s killers in line with its election manifesto.

indelible mark on the psyche of the people.


Majed along with the co-conspirators brutally murdered Bangabandhu and 18 members of his family including Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, three sons – Captain Sheikh Kamal, Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal and 10-year-old Sheikh Russel, two daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal, brother Sheikh Naser, peasant leader Abdur Rab Serniabat, youth leader Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni and his wife Arzu Moni, Baby Serniabat, Sukanta Babu, Arif and Abdul Nayeem Khan Rintu on August 15, 1975. 

The murders of Bangabandhu and his family shocked the nation to the core and left an indelible mark on the psyche of the people. Though 44 years have passed, the nation mourns the loss of its beloved leader and his family. The senseless brutality that the killers showed that day can never be forgiven and the remaining killers must be brought to justice at any cost. 

The government should spare no effort in hunting down these heinous murders who killed the Father of the Nation and his family. The people of Bangladesh want to see the remaining killers hanged as soon as possible.
