Bail granted to 23,000 people in 13 days

Nearly 23,000 people have secured bail from the virtual courts across the country in 13 working days during the countrywide lockdown.

Supreme Court spokesperson and Special Officer of High Court Division Barrister Md Saifur Rahman said that the lower courts and tribunals across the country granted bail to the 22,863 people, who were in detention, in 13 working days from April 12 to April 29. However, a total of 289 children, who were accused of criminal charges, have secured bail in the 13 days. Most of the accused have already been released from jails in different districts, he added.

He also said that the lower courts have been continuing hearing and disposing of cases virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

According to him, the lower courts and the tribunal disposed of a total 41,920 bail petitions in the time and granted bail to the 22,863 people.

During the virtual hearing, a total of 1,604 people were granted bail on April 12, while the lower courts granted bail to 3,259 people on April 13, a total of 2,360 people secured bail on April 15, the lower courts in their virtual hearings granted bail to 1,842 people on April 18, a total of 1,635 people were granted bail on April 19, a total of 1,576 people secured bail on April 20, a total of 1,349 accused secured bail on April 21, a total of 1,592 accused were granted bail on April 22, a total of 1,839 people on April 25, a total of 1,593 people on April 26, a total of 1,395 people on April 27, a total of 1,422 people on April 28 and a total of 1,412 people secured bail from the lower courts on April 29. However, the virtual courts were closed on April 30 and May 1 due to the holidays.

The virtual court functions began on April 12 following enforcement of countrywide lockdown in order to deal with the urgent cases during the Covid-19 situation.     

The regular activities of Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Supreme Court also remained closed due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. However, some benches of the High Court are running virtually during the Covid-19 pandemic.
