By melting the corks of plastic bottles, yarn is being made in Bogura. By using the yarn, bags are being prepared and more than one thousand people, mostly women, have found their ways of daily income in working in the factories to prepare yarn and bags in Bogura and Sonatola of the district.
By meeting the local demands, those plastic bags made in Sonatola are being sold in various places outside the district.
Entrepreneurs, however, opined that this industry would expand further if any government incentive is given in this connection.
In Baluahat Karigarpara several industries have been set up to prepare bags by using plastic yarn. The corks collected from plastic bottles in various areas are being separated at the Disposable Materials industries at Charmatha and Matidali areas of Bogura. Those corks are cleaned and melted to make various coloured yarn. These yarn are being sent to Baluhat Karigar Para.
The yarns are being processed in various houses of Karigarpara. By using these processed yarn, plastic bags are being prepared in more than a dozens of local industries.
Artisans of the areas prepare more than 300,000 pieces of bags on an average per month.
Widowed Nazma lost her husband four years ago. She prepares plastic yarn at her own house and sent those to the industries. She earns enough money to maintain her family.
Another female artisan Sufia informed, she works to make yarn whenever she gets time after maintaining her household chores. This is adding an additional income for her family.
Raihan Ali informed, several hundred labourers work in the factories and they are all living well with their family members.
Shahidul Islam of Matidali areas informed, the corks of the plastic bottles are separated, cleaned and yarns of various colours are made by melting those corks.
Former UP member Saju Mia informed, more than 200 families are involved in preparing plastic bags for more than one decade. By working in the industries to process yarn and making plastic bags, many people including women have become self-reliant and earning an extra money for their families.
Local entrepreneurs including Sirajul Islam informed 9 to 10 bags are prepared using one kilogramme of yarn. The traders sell those bags at the wholesale price of Tk 20 to 40 per piece according to the size.
They further mentioned the production cost has been increased recently and the government support in this connection would further develop this industry and providing more jobs for people.
AKM Mahfuzur Rahman, DGM of BSCIC, Bogura informed, the cottage industries have been built up to make plastic bags using yarn made by melting the corks of plastic bottles.
The expansion of such industry would check the environmental pollution and make an opportunity of employment for thousands of more people.
He assured that all sorts of assistance for the entrepreneurs in this connection.
