An awareness workshop on activating village courts was held on Tuesday in Narail, aimed at promoting local justice and strengthening local dispute resolution mechanisms. Organised by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Narail and the Local Government Division (LGD), the workshop took place at the DC’s conference room.
Deputy Commissioner Sharmin Akhter Jahan attended the event as the chief guest, while Deputy Director of Local Government Julia Sukaina presided over the session. Presentations were delivered by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Lincon Biswas, District Information Officer Md. Rostam Ali, Youth Development Department’s Deputy Director Md. Moniruzzaman, and Wave Foundation District Manager Md. Jenarul Islam.
Other attendees included Assistant Commissioner Nuren Mayisha Khan, Wave Foundation’s upazila coordinators Rezmin Sultana (Lohagora), Md. Omar Faruque (Narail Sadar), and Bakiya Sultana Nila (Kalia), along with representatives from NGOs, print, and electronic media.
Speakers emphasized the vital role of village courts in providing accessible justice to rural communities. They noted that village courts are an effective legal mechanism for resolving minor disputes, especially benefiting the underprivileged who often lack the means to hire legal representation.
Wave Foundation’s Jenarul Islam shared that, under the LGD project’s third phase, village courts are currently active in 39 unions across three upazilas in Narail.
From January 2024 to May 2025, a total of 921 cases were filed, of which 888 were resolved—achieving a 96.41% settlement rate and 98.64% implementation rate. Village courts have facilitated financial recoveries totaling Tk 1.02 crore, including land value settlements.
