The government is working with utmost importance to establish consumers rights. It is possible to ensure consumers rights by raising awareness.
The market campaign has already been intensified by setting up the National Department of Consumers Rights Protection. The Bangladesh Competition Commission has been formed to end trade’s monopoly and ensure competition in trade. Safe food laws have been enacted to ensure safe food. Various activities are being conducted to make the consumers aware.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said this while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of District-Upazila Consumers’ Representatives Conference-2021 and Consumer Rights Strengthening Seminar organized online by Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh (CAB) on Sunday.
The commerce minister said, the Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh (CAB) is playing an important role in establishing consumers rights. All concerned need to work hard to create awareness among the consumers. The demand for products in the market has increased, the cost of living has increased. Everyone should be aware of the establishment of consumers rights. The government has taken steps to reduce tariffs on various import-dependent products to keep commodity prices stable during the Covid-19.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working day and night for the welfare of the people of the country. The present business-friendly government has taken all possible steps to ensure supply of the country's essential commodities, its fair prices and adequate stocks. The government has also special incentive package to businessmen,” said the commerce minister.
“Under the social security program, cash assistance has been provided to 5 million families in the country to alleviate sufferings of the consumers. Sales of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) products under commerce ministry have been increased several times to make consumer goods easily available at fair prices” the minister said.
“Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission is working sincerely to control the price of goods. Due to the strict measures taken by the government, the stock, supply and price of all products are normal even in the pandemic situation,” the minister added.
Daffodil University Associate Professor Syed Mizanur Rahman presented the keynote paper at the seminar on ‘Consumers Rights Strengthening’.
CAB President Ghulam Rahman presided over the function where Bangladesh Competition Commission Chairperson Md Mofizul Islam, Director General of the Department of National Consumers Rights Protection Bablu Kumar Saha and Bangladesh Safe Food Authority member Abdul Alim spoke as special guests.
Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, General Secretary of CAB delivered the address of welcome on the occasion.
