Meherpara Awami League General Secretary and former Union Parishad Chairman Mahbubul Hassan, 40, were brutally chopped to death by miscreants. Two more were injured at that time.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at midnight, around 12 pm, in Meherpara's Vagirathpur area under Madhabdi Thana. The deceased Mahbubul Hassan is the son of Hazi Imam Uddin. According to the eyewitness and relatives of the deceased, Mahbubul Hassan was going back home as usual from the union office of Awami League at Vagirathpur Majar bus stand with his party leaders on Tuesday night.
When they reached in front of Obaidullah Textile, 7 or 8 miscreants carrying weapon attacked Mahbubul Hassan and his party leaders.
The miscreants shot guns and kept chopping Mahububl Hassan with sharp weapons. They also injured Said Hassan Pappu, 38, and Farhad Miya, 40, when they came ahead to help him.
The locals rescued the injured and hurried them to the emergency department of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctor declared Mahbubul Hassan dead. The other two injured were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The relative of the deceased, leaders and activists of Awami League affiliate organisation, and local representatives rushed to the Sadar Hospital to learn of the news of his death. His relatives and party activists claimed that it was a planned murder based on past political conflicts. They demanded exemplary punishment of the miscreants related to the killing.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, Mahmudul Kabir Bashar, said that former chairman of Meherpara Union, Mahbubul Hassan, was brought to the emergency department of the hospital with his three companions in bloody condition. Large wounds were spotted in Mahbubul Hassan’s shoulder and in the back if his head. But information regarding the gun shot can be confirmed after the post mortem. The cause of his death was excessive blood loss. Said Hassn Pappu and Farhad Miya were taken to Dhaka in injured condition.
According to Narsingdi District Police, they are investigating the matter and taking action to arrest the criminals. Four have been detained till now regarding this incident. Additional police staffs are deployed to keep the aftermath law-and-order situation stable.
