An auto-rickshaw driver was brutally stabbed to death by miscreants who broke into his house in the dead of night in Patuakhali's Sadar upazila.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in Sehakathi village of Jainkathi Union. The deceased has been identified as Mosharaf Khan (42), son of Halim Khan of the village.
According to the victim's father, Mosharaf had been living separately with his wife, Shahanaaz Begum, and their ninth-grade daughter, Mala Akhtar Koli, in a new house in a relatively isolated area of the village for about a year and a half.
Halim Khan stated that around 2:30 AM on Tuesday, miscreants broke into the house by chiseling through a wall. Mosharaf was sleeping on the veranda, while his wife and daughter were inside the main room. Hearing the intruders, the wife and daughter began screaming, alerting neighbors who started rushing towards the house.
Sensing the crowd approaching, the assailants tried to flee through the front door. At that moment, Mosharaf turned on the light and grabbed one of them. The miscreants then stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured on the spot before escaping.
Locals later rescued Mosharaf and rushed him to the hospital.
The duty doctor at the 250-bed Patuakhali General Hospital emergency department confirmed that Mosharaf was declared dead upon arrival. The body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.
Imitiaz Ahmed, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station, stated that the body has been recovered and sent to the Patuakhali Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Senior police officials have visited the scene, and an investigation is underway. Preparations are being made to file a case. Police have also seized three pairs of sandals and a blood-stained shirt from near the scene.
