Australia to assist in improving quality of higher education

Australia has expressed interest in providing necessary assistance for the improvement ofhigher education and quality assurance system in Bangladesh. 

Representatives of theAustralian Department of Education, Skills and Employment expressed their interest in ameeting with University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) held through a virtualplatform on Tuesday, said a UGC press release.

Dr. FerdousZaman, Secretary (Additional Charge) of the University Grants Commission ofBangladesh (UGC) while presenting an overall picture of the higher education sector inBangladesh remarked that the government had taken multifaceted steps in the past few yearsto improve the quality of higher education in Bangladesh. 

A number of specializeduniversities had been established and new subjects in universities had been opened to produceskilled manpower to meet the demands of current labour market. Dr. FerdousZaman in hisspeech mentioned that Bangladesh Accreditation Council had been established to oversee thequality of education. 

Information management system of higher education in Bangladesh isalso being modernized which will help in evaluating the education system of Bangladesh, healso said. Brett Galt-Smith, Councilor, Education and Research at the Australian High Commission inNew Delhi, delivered a presentation at the meeting on the Australian Education and QualityAssurance System and assured UGC to provide support for the promotion of higher educationin Bangladesh. 

At the meeting, Jane Azurin, Director, Multilateral Policy, InternationalPartnership Branch, gave a presentation on Australia's Qualifications Recognition System.

He called upon the University Grants Commission to provide necessary information forupdating the country education profile of Bangladesh.

Mohammad MaksudurRahmanBhuiyan, Director (Additional Charge), Information Management, Communication andTraining Division of University Grants Commission, delivered a detailed presentation aboutthe Qualifications Recognition System in Bangladesh and the various professionalorganizations associated with it.

MorsalineBillah, Professor of Khulna University, and Tahleel Moon, Councilor of theBangladesh High Commission in Australia, also spoke at the meeting.
