BSS, Rangpur

Awami League (AL) leaders have said August 21 is a scandalous day in political history when a grenade attack was conducted in 2004 aiming at killing AL President Sheikh Hasina as part of a deep-rooted conspiracy.

The observations came in separate discussions organised by the Rangpur district and city units of AL on Saturday to pay rich tributes to victims of the gruesome grenade attack on the peaceful public rally of AL on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka.

Abiding by the health directives in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, AL and its associate bodies, other political, professional and socio-cultural organisations chalked out programs in observance of the black day in the divisional city and across the district.

The programs included hoisting of the national and party flags at half mast and black flags and placing wreaths at portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 22 martyrs of August 21 grenade attack.

Besides, the main milad and doa mehfil followed by the main discussion were arranged at District Model Mosque and Islamic Cultural Center seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and martyrs of August 21 grenade attack.

With President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed in the chair, its General Secretary Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju addressed the main meeting as the keynote discussant.

Vice-president of district AL Advocate Elias Ahmed, its Joint General Secretary Motahar Hossain Mandal Mowla, Organising Secretary Jasem Bin Hossain Jummon, Office Secretary Amin Sarker, President of district Chhatra League Mehedee Hasan Rony, among others, addressed.

With President of city AL Shafiur Rahman Shafi in the chair, it’s General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal, Vice-presidents Idris Ali and Advocate Dilshad Islam Mukul addressed another discussion.

In his keynote speech, Advocate Raju said the August 21 grenade attack was part of a deep-rooted conspiracy that started with killing of Bangabandhu and most of his family members to make the nation leaderless and erase AL from this soil.

He blamed the then BNP-Jamaat alliance government for patronizing the terrible August 21 grenade attack, destroying evidences and staging ‘Judge Mian drama’ to deviate investigation of the case toward wrong direction to save the criminals.

Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed said the August 21 is a shocking day in political history when BNP-Jamaat alliance government patronized the grenade attack on an AL rally arranged against terrorism, militancy and corruption.

“The August 21 grenade attack was a part of continuous conspiracy as per the master plan that started since August 15, 1975 with killing Bangabandhu to reverse independence and erase spirit of the War of Liberation,” he said.
