Anti-Terrorism Unit of Bangladesh Police arrested a death row convict militant on Monday night from Savar area, adjacent to the capital Dhaka.
He was identified as Abdur Rahman alias Chandu Mia, a member of the banned militant group JMB.
Talking to the Bangladesh Post on Tuesday, Additional Deputy Inspector General (Adl DIG) Md Moniruzzaman, who is also a senior officer of the elite ATU, confirmed it.
The arrested militant was convicted around three years after a Rangpur court sentenced him to death for killing the caretaker of a mazar (shrine) in 2015.
He was hiding posing as rickshaw puller and day labourer in different areas over the years.
The leading anti-terrorism expert Adl DIG Moniruzzaman said, “A team of ATU arrested him from Savar area around 7:30pm on Monday. During primary interrogation, the convict admitted his involvement in the killing.”
On November 10 in 2015, caretaker of a shrine, Rahmat Ali, 55, of Bade Moskur village, was hacked to death in Choita intersection area of Kaunia upazila in Rangpur.
On March 18 in 2018, a Rangpur court sentenced seven members of JMB including Chandu Mia to death for killing him.
The other convicts are -- Masud Rana, Bijoy, Liton Mia, Ihsak Ali, Shakhwat Hossain and Sarwar Hossain.
