The attack on Dhaka 17 by-polls candidate Ashraful Alam alias Hero Alom is very unfortunate and unexpected to us. Various vested elements, who want to make Bangladesh a failed state and bring back the undemocratic government era to the country again in the name of movement, attacked Hero Alam in a bid to foil the next general election.
Immediate after the incident, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said all the attackers of independent candidate Hero Alom in the Dhaka-17 by-election would be brought to the book. A total of nine people were arrested in connection with the attack so far. Police and members of different intelligent agencies are investing the incidents to find out the real story.
The Dhaka-17 by-election was held on July 17. The by-election was conducted peacefully throughout the day. And the isolated incident took place at the last moment. Therefore, this incident also raises questions about the attackers’ motive and their identity.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and some foreign diplomats are desperately trying to make the incident an issue. Such act from diplomats is not acceptable, to say the least. The foreign diplomats do not do the same as a group when similar things happen in the US, UK, France or in other countries.
Their comments on the
internal affairs of Bangladesh
are obscene and against
diplomatic norms and etiquettes
Bangladesh government always states that it does not want anyone to interfere in the internal affairs of the country. So, no country needs to worry about the internal affairs of Bangladesh. But any proposal from the friendly countries will be considered seriously.
The foreign diplomat’s intervention in the internal affairs of the country is not appropriate. The foreign diplomats especially ambassadors and high commissioners stationed in capital Dhaka, must need to understand the political history of Bangladesh before issuing any public statement or making any remarks.
It has been noticed that countries like Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and the delegation of the European Union regularly tell us to improve our human rights situation, while it’s them, who have been providing shelter to the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred intellectuals. It was seen that the human rights are violated extremely in those countries, which are asking about the issue.
Their comments on the internal affairs of Bangladesh are obscene and against diplomatic norms and etiquettes. Their behaviour is contradictory and the way they are trying to fulfill the interests of a vested quarter is worrisome. They (foreign diplomats) must not make any unwanted statements and comments on the internal affairs of Bangladesh in order to strengthen the friendship and bonding.
Foreign diplomats are free to give advice on human rights, elections and politics as long as they do not interfere in the country’s internal affairs and cross diplomatic etiquettes. Therefore, they must refrain from giving ‘prescription’ regarding democracy and human rights of Bangladesh.
