The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Saturday laid the foundation stone of ‘The development work of Shaheed Zayan Chowdhury Playground’ at Banani-1 in the capital.

Mayor Atiqul said, “The playground has been named after Zayan Chowdhury who was killed in recent explosions in Sri Lanka. Zayan used to play in this playground with other children in the area. After his grievous death, locals suggested naming this playground after Zayan’s name. This is a protest against terrorism.”

The mayor also said that the playground would be built with modern facilities including cricket pitch, internal and external walkway, public toilet, separate playing zone for children, bench, cricket net practice, beautiful boundary fencing, green belt etc. The estimated cost for the development work is Tk 51,917,170 and the target is set to complete the work by March 2020.

The 8-year-old Zayan Chowdhury was the grandson of Awami League leader Sheikh Selim. He was having lunch with his father at a restaurant in Sri Lanka when the bomb was exploded. Zayan’s grandfather Selim was also present at the programme. He urged all to pray for his beloved grandson and seek internal peace of his departed soul. Among others, Ward Councilor Mofizur Rahman, Project Manager Dr Tariq- bin- Yusuf and Architect Iqbal Habib, were also present.
