A man hacked his mother to death after she reportedly refused to give him money for drugs at Paschim Barua Para in Cox’s Bazar municipality area on early Saturday. He surrendered to the police the same day.

The deceased was identified as Anwara Begum, 55, wife of Niaz Ahmed.

The detainee was identified as Hussain Mohammad Abid, 28, son of Anwara Begum and Niaz Ahmed.

However, the police said that they are investigating the exact motive behind the incident.

Elias Khan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of sadar police station, said Hussain Mohammad Abid went to the police station and surrendered to police after admitting his guilt.

According to his statement, Abid stabbed his mother, Anwara Begum, with a sharp weapon around 2:30am as she refused to give him money, leaving her dead on the spot.

The OC said a few days ago, Abid’s father sold a piece of land. Using that money, Niaz Ahmed, along with his wife, was staying at the house of their daughter in Chattogram for medical treatment. On Friday, Abid’s mother, Anwara Begum, returned to Cox’s Bazar from Chattogram. That night, Abid asked his mother for money, but she explained her inability to provide the money. This led to an argument, during which Abid displayed unruly behavior towards his mother.

After the argument, both mother and son had dinner and went to sleep at home. Later in the middle of night, Abid reportedly hacked his mother to death with a sharp machete, the OC added.

After being informed about the incident, a police team visited the scene in the morning. At that time, the door to the deceased woman's bedroom was found locked from the outside. The door was then opened, and the body was found lying on the bed. A sharp knife was recovered from beside the body by the police.

Police recovered the dead body and sent it to the local hospital morgue for autopsy.
