Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain on Sunday said he will contest the upcoming national election from Dhaka.
He made the announcement on Sunday afternoon while speaking to reporters in front of the Dhanmondi Election Office, where he went to register as a voter under the Dhaka-10 constituency.
"I can now say with certainty that I will contest the election," Asif told journalists.
When asked about his resignation from the post of adviser, he said, "The timing of my resignation will depend on discussions and a decision at the higher level of the government."
"As I wanted to run for the election from a Dhaka constituency, I have become a voter of the city," he said.
"I plan to run as an independent candidate. Let's see what happens next," Asif said, responding to a query.
"I became a voter long ago, but could not cast my vote in the last two elections, in 2018 and 2024. I just want to make sure that I can cast my vote this year," he also said.
"I have not spoken to any party. It doesn't matter whether any party has left any constituency vacant or not. I will make my own decision," the adviser said, responding to whether BNP did not name any candidate in Dhaka-10 because of him.
"I became a voter in Dhaka-10 as I plan on living in the area after resigning from the government. It is not important where you become a voter in order to contest the election -- as long as you are a citizen of the country, you can run from any constituency," he said, replying to another query.
Currently, Asif is a voter of Muradnagar upazila under Cumilla-3 constituency.
The Dhaka-10 constituency comprises Dhanmondi, New Market, Kalabagan, and Hazaribagh areas.
BNP has yet to announce its candidate for this constituency, while Jamaat-e-Islami has already nominated Supreme Court lawyer Jasim Uddin Sarkar.
