An Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) of Fultola Police Station in Khulna allegedly shot dead three people including a small boy by illegally using his service pistol.
He was identified as Shoumen Roy, an ASI of Fultola Police Station in Khulna.
Talking to Bangladesh Post, Dr Kh Mahid Uddin, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Khulna Range admitted it.
At first, the ASI committed a criminal offence, which will be tried as per criminal procedures. But we shall also form a deprtmental committee to probe everything against Shoumen, the DIG added.
Khulna Police Super (SP) Mohamamd Mahbub Hasan told Bangladesh Post that Shoumen was present at the police station during regular roll call on Saturday night.
Replying to a question, he said, after discharging his duty, he left his working station.
I came to know that Shoumen had left his rented residence at around 5:30 am. Instead of coming to Fultola Police Station in Khulna, he left for Kushtia, the SP added.
Md Khairul Islam, Additional Police Super (B- Circle) of Khulna District said, “Shoumen lives with his family. May be, he left his house on Sunday morning. “
Responding to a query about unauthorized carrying of service pistol, he said, “Usually Shoumen does not take the service pistol to his residence. But I am not sure whether the pistol which was used in the murder, was a service pistol. I did not see it.”
Earlier on the day, Shoumen shot three people, including a woman and her child, in broad daylight in Kushtia town.
The deceased were primarily identified as Asma Khatun (27), her son Robin (70, and Shakil Khan (34).
Police has already detained Shoumen and grilling him to unearth the motive behind the murders.
Kushtia Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sabbirul Alam said, the incident happened in the city's Customs Junction area around 11:45am. Locals caught the ASI and handed him over to police.
According to the family members of the victim Asma, Shoumen married her.
Before joining Fultola Police Station in Khulna, he worked in Halsha Police camp in Kushtia.
He was engaged in extra marital affairs with Asma when he was in Kushtia. Around one and half years ago, they reportedly married each other. But recently they were separated.
The woman and the child were standing by the road when Shakil, employee of a local mobile banking service providing shop, arrived there following her phone call.
As the woman was talking to him, the accused killer arrived on the spot. He seemed agitated, an eyewitness said.
Shoumen started talking to them. At one stage, the ASI shot the woman in the head, using his firearm, leaving her dead on the spot. He also shot Shakil.
As the child, Robin, ran to a nearby mosque, the ASI dragged him out and shot him also leaving him dead on the spot.
Critically injured Shakil was declared dead after locals took him to a nearby hospital.
As locals gathered, hearing gunshots, the ASI tried to flee. Locals then chased him and the ASI took shelter in a building nearby. The crowd besieged the building until police arrived and arrested ASI Shoumen along with the firearm.
Asma's mother Hasina Banu told local reporters at Kushtia General Hospital that her daughter told them that Shoumen married her.
According to the mother, Asma along with her son left the house. Before leaving, Asma told her mother that Shoumen will take them to Khulna.
Family members of Shakil said Asama had affair with Shakil. But they yet to get married. Shoumen several times threatened to give up relations with Asma.
Asma had married twice before she married Shoumen and slain Robin was from her first husband Rubel.
Rubel was her second husband, Sujon was second wife. Shoumen was third husband of Asma, said local sources.
Rubel is the father of slain Robin.
