Ekushey Padak winner and internationally-reputed painter Kalidas Karmakar passed away at a city hospital in the capital on Friday.
He breathed his last at around 3:00pm at Labaid Specialised Hospital in the city following a cardiac arrest at his Eskaton residence, Fine Art Faculty Dean Professor Nisar Hossain said.
He left behind two daughters, three brothers and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
His daughters Kanka Karmakar and Keya Karmakar, have been living in America. They have already started for Bangladesh.
His body was kept at the mortuary of BIRDEM for his family members. Artist Kalidas Karmakar was born at Niltuli in Faridpur city in 1946. He completed a two-year introductory course from the then Art Institute of Dhaka, 1962-64, and graduated in fine arts from the Government Art College in Kolkata in 1969.
He participated in numerous international team exhibitions and received international accolades.
His role in the promotion and spread of the printing industry in Bangladesh through Graphic Tentelier-71 is memorable.
He has experimented modern art through contemporary artwork participating in various fellowships in India, Poland, France, Japan, Korea and America.
The combination of different religions and various symbols of folk art have been emerged in the painting of artist Kalidas Karmakar. The artist was a specialist in the arena of viscosity printing and awarded Shilpakala Padak in 2016, the Sultan Gold Award in 2015 and Ekhushey Padak in 2018 for his contribution to fine arts, according to the Wikipedia sources.
