Army men deployed in 61 dists to combat virus

More than 25,000 members of Bangladesh Armey have been deployed in 61 districts across the country to help the civil administrations control the spread of coronavirus, Inter Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said on Thursday. A total of 290 army teams are assisting the local administrations from the nearby cantonments without setting up any outside campus, ISPR said in a statement.    

It said troops are coordinating with district magistrates and arranging awareness rising campaigns for the mass people. They are also supervising the mandatory quarantine of oversee returnees, it read. The army will continue its activities to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the statement added.

As of Thursday, Bangladesh reported a total of 44 confirmed cases of coronavirus with five deaths. The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) on Thursday said 11 people so far have recovered fully from the disease. More than three billion people around the world were living under lockdown as governments stepped up their efforts against the coronavirus pandemic which has left more than 22,000 people dead.

As the number of confirmed cases worldwide soared past 487,000, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that only a concerted global effort could stop the spread of the virus.
