An exemplary initiative indeed

It is good to note that the government is taking tougher actions against all corrupt elements irrespective of political identity.  Reiterating the government’s stance against corruption and irregularities and criticizing BNP’s implausible comments over the recent crackdown against casinos in sporting clubs, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday rightly said BNP should give thanks to the government for this stance and the ongoing drive  which was absent during their regime.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is relentlessly working to restrain corruption implementing her ‘zero tolerance’ policy. Now the government is taking actions against the corrupt leaders irrespective of their political identities. To this end BNP should be thankful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her tough stance against corruption and irregularities. But still BNP have not been able to get out of their shell. They keep expressing their senseless comments over the government’s noble initiative to curb out corruption from within.

Awami League should take necessary steps to

identify the outsiders who joined in

over the last decade, bring them under strong v

igilance and hold them to account if found guilty

As the pro-liberation force Awami League is in the government in three consecutive terms, some outsiders have entered the party at different levels and also in the front organizations.  In this regard, Awami League should take necessary steps to identify the outsiders who joined in over the last decade, bring them under strong vigilance and hold them to account if found guilty.

Existence of opposition both as an alternative government and as a critic of the government is a significant feature of democratic system. Opposition has a right to question and get those answered by the party in government. They are also crucial for putting pressure on the government and getting some works done through them. So, in a functional democracy, the stronger the opposition the more the accountability of government will be ensured. We hope BNP will play its due role in criticizing the role of the ruling party so that the government can act accordingly to ensure good governance. But the criticism has to be constructive and plausible and, importantly, should not be the tool to spread propaganda and hatred.
