Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) has completed its nine-day humanitarian support operation for residents affected by the devastating fire at Karail slum.
The assistance centre, set up at the T&T playground in Gulshan, wrapped up its activities on Saturday with the distribution of powdered milk packets to 1,200 affected children.
Brigadier General Fida Mahmud, Additional Director General of Ansar & VDP, attended the concluding event as chief guest. Speaking during the emergency baby food distribution, he said the force’s primary aim was to reach vulnerable families with timely humanitarian support to help them cope with the psychological and material losses caused by the fire. He reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to standing beside communities during future humanitarian crises.
The massive fire on 25 November displaced thousands of slum residents, triggering acute shortages of shelter, baby food, winter clothing and cooked meals. In response, Ansar & VDP launched a humanitarian support centre on 28 November at the directive of its Director General, Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud.
Throughout the nine-day operation, the force distributed 500 blankets and additional winter clothing to 400 people. It also provided cooked meals twice daily to 2,000 affected residents, helping maintain their minimum food security during the emergency.
Officials said the coordinated support programme offered distressed families a strong sense of relief and encouragement, helping them regain confidence and begin rebuilding their lives.
In addition to food and clothing support, Ansar & VDP is also working to install an alternative Water Supply Point in the slum area to ensure sustainable access to safe drinking water for residents.
In his closing remarks, Brigadier General Mahmud expressed gratitude to the Director of Dhaka Metropolitan Ansar Md Asaduzzaman Gani, Dhaka Zone officials, Metropolitan Ansar members, Town Defence Party personnel and Ansar Battalion members for their dedicated service throughout the operation.
