The Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued clearance for the direct recruitment of male and female prison guards for the Directorate of Prisons on March 31 this year.

According to a notice issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, a total of 354 male and female prison guards are to be directly recruited for the Directorate of Prisons against the vacant posts.

After completing the recruitment process, the final list of appointees was published on the website of the Directorate of Prisons on July 11. The final list was published following the recommendations of the selection committee of the prison guards, but it did not mention any information on the job circular and the number of final appointees.

According to the notification, a total of 354 prison guards were supposed to be recruited, but finally, a list of 569 appointees were published on the website of the Directorate of Prisons.

Inspector General of Prisons Brig. General Sayed Md Motaher Hossain told the Bangladesh Post that he has recently joined the new post. “I have learnt that the recruitment was made in a transparent way. However, I will look into the matter. If any irregularity is found in the recruitment, action will be taken against those involved in it.” Our correspondent contacted Colonel Sheikh Sujaur Rahman, Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Prisons  and Chairman of Prison Guard Recruitment Committee for his comments about the recruitment of additional 215 people.

When asked why any fresh notification could not be found on any website or anywhere else, he said that the recruitment process has been completed with transparency. He said it is written in the circular that number of recruits can be increased or decreased according to the demand.

Md Main Uddin Bhuiyan, Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Administration) and Member Secretary of the Directorate of Prisons told the Bangladesh Post that it should be on the Ministry's website and not on the website of Directorate of Prisons.

The Security Secretary (Prisons) of the Ministry of Home Affairs Md Moshiur Rahman told the Bangladesh Post that he cannot give any information on the matter right now as he has recently joined this department.

“If you want to know about the matter, apply for it to the Directorate of Right to Information,” he said.

This correspondent tried to contact the then Home Minister over phone for his comments, but he did not receive the call.

When asked if any notification was published on the recruitment of additional manpower, Public Security (Prisons) Deputy Secretary Tahnia Rahman Chowdhury got excited and misbehaved with this correspondent. The audio clip is available with the Bangladesh Post.
