Actress Anju Ghosh, who shot into fame in West Bengal with her role in the hit movie “Beder Meye Jostna” nearly three decades ago, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Anju joined the BJP at function in Kolkata on Wednesday in the presence of state party President Dilip Ghosh. "Beder Meye Josna" was the biggest blockbuster in Bangladesh when it was released on June 9, 1989 and was remade in West Bengal two years later. The 53-year-old actress now has an Indian passport and voter I-card and even voted in the national election. Her passport was issued in July last year and her voter card mentions January 1, 2002 as date of issue. West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh handed over a party flag to Anju Ghosh as he welcomed her into the party. BJP West Bengal unit Vice President Jayprakash Majumdar showed the media in Kolkata on Thursday a copy of the purported birth certificate of Anju issued by the Kolkata municipal corporation to back the claim that she is an Indian national who worked in films made in India and Bangladesh. Majumdar displayed the birth certificate copy after Trinamool Congress leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim took a dig at BJP for inducting Anju. “They should have first checked if the person they are taking in the party is at all an Indian national,” Hakim said. Majumdar hit back by saying the Mayor does not know that the civic body he now heads issued the birth certificate of Anju. He also produced the actress’ Indian passport, multi-purpose card Aadhar that shows she resides in Salt Lake locality of Kolkata. BJP had raised a storm during parliamentary poll campaign in April when Bangladeshi actors Ferdous Ahmed and Gazi Abdun Noor had participated in road shows in favour of Trinamool Congress candidates. BJP had raised the issue with the Election Commission after which Ferdous was sent back to Bangladesh and Indian authorities cancelled his business visa and blacklisted him for committing visa rule “violation.”
