Amazon can give a boost to country’s export

Export earnings can be doubled by 2030 if the country’s products are sold through the Amazon, an online e-commerce giant platform. ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak said this following a meeting with an Amazon delegation on Wednesday at Agargaon ICT tower in the capital. Gogon Deep Sagor, category manager, international expansion department of Amazon, led the delegation.

The Amazon authority is interested in selling the country’s products in the USA and Europe through their global warehouse. To this end, Amazon wants necessary policy support from Bangladesh government so that local entrepreneurs can send them their products smoothly. “Usually when it's about the export of local products, it includes LC opening, bonded warehouse, NBR, customs; and some other processes are required. It’s tough for the small entrepreneurs to go through this lengthy procedure,” the minister said.

The export process will be easy for the entrepreneurs if they can send their products to Amazon, he continued. “We already have $40 billion export globally. If we can join the Amazon, new export destinations will open for us, which will further increase our export volume,” he added. Asked about the policy he replied, “We already have their proposal. Now we are to form our policy and strategies. Hopefully we will find a solution soon”.

“We will discuss this issue with the Prime Minister’s ICT advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy this week.” In response to a question whether Amazon will open an office in Bangladesh Palak said that totally depends on the e-commerce giant’s interest and policy. However, as per meeting details, they are not opening any office in the country.

Mahfuzur Rahman, CEO of Tech Rajshahi, also Bangladesh’s merchant assistant organisation of the Amazon, is coordinating things here for Amazon. None of the visiting delegates of Amazon has said anything about opening office here in Bangladesh, Mahfuzur added.
