Bumper Aman paddy production has brought smiles on farmers’ faces across the country. This year a bountiful production has been seen due to the favourable weather and adequate rainfall.
Food ministry secretary Dr. Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum told Bangladesh Post, “Recently I have visited six districts including Narail, Jashore, Jhenaidah, Magura. We are expecting bumper production of Aman despite some damages caused by floods.”
“Like Boro procurement, if we can have sufficient stock of Aman paddy, our overall stock will stand at a satisfactory level”, she added.
“On the other hand, under the social safety net program, the government is distributing rice to the ‘ultra-poor and destitute families’, where almost 4.50 lakh tonnes of rice has gone from the national stock. With the procurement of Aman, the national stock will be restored,” she further said.
Based on different district correspondents’ updates, it was learnt that most of the paddy fields wear a golden colour. Within the next few days, they will be able to carry their crops to their homes. Now they are looking forward to getting a fair price for their produce.
Moreover, improved and adequate supply of Aman seeds and saplings, less attack of pest, distribution of fertilisers from state-run agencies to farmers at the right time has also helped the farmers increase their Aman production.
The Aman rice production is expected to exceed 1.50 crore tonnes as the crops are growing excellently under favourable climate conditions, farmers and officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.
According to the DAE, a total of 591,815 hectares of land has been set for the cultivation of Aman in the current 2020-21 season.
DAE information showed that due to floods, around 1.63 lakh tonnes of paddy were damaged. But it will not put an impact on the overall Aman production.
“This time the yield of Bona Aman has been estimated at 1.2 tonnes per hectare and Ropa Aman 2.73 tonnes per hectare. Besides, the average yield was estimated at 2.64 tonnes. As a result, 15,740,398 tonnes of paddy is expected to be produced this year,” DAE field service wing director, Md Asadullah said.
According to correspondents, in Panchagarh, about 99,695 hectares of land has been brought under Aman cultivation with a production target of 326,644 metric tonnes of food grain. T Aman was cultivated on 104,135 hectares of land in six upazilas where at least 3.6 lakh tonnes of rice are expected to get. In Narsingdi, a total of 42,180 hectares of land have been brought under Aman cultivation.
In Netrokona, a target was fixed to produce 3.53 lakhs tonnes of T-Aman rice by cultivating T-Aman paddy on 134,625 hectors of land this season. In Rangpur, farmers have cultivated Aman on 606,852 hectares of land exceeding the target.
