Allegation of land grabbing against Jamalpur jail authorities

Allegations of land grabbing have been raised in the Jamalpur District Jail Reconstruction Project at a cost of Taka 210 crore.  It has been alleged that the jail authorities have started work on the project despite the court imposing a temporary and interim ban on the construction of the facility on the land.  On the other hand, the jail authorities say that the facility is not being built on the plaintiff land. The victims made the allegation at a press conference at Jamalpur Press Club at 11am on Tuesday.

In a written statement at the press conference, Sakibul Azad, son of Rabia Azad, who owns a portion of the land, said, “My grandfather, the heroic freedom fighter A  Baten,  before his death, he gave this to his two daughters Rabia Azad and Fatema Akhtar.  When we went to conduct official paperwork for this land, we saw that the land was not in the name of my father, the late Alif Uddin Munshi, but was mistakenly registered in Khas Khatian No.1.  He then became the plaintiff and filed another lawsuit against the caretaker, deputy commissioner and additional deputy commissioner (revenue) of the district jail on 32/1996.

The two daughters of the freedom fighter filed a case in the Jamalpur Senior Judge's Court seeking permanent restraint for eviction .  The court issued a show cause notice to the defendants on February 8 this year in the wake of the case.  Without showing any reason, they forcibly broke the tin boundary and started the construction work on the land. The plaintiff demanded the government to resolve the dispute over the land subject to investigation

In this regard, the district public works department executive engineer  Mubarak Hossain said the construction work has started there after the district jail authorities handed over the land. District Jail Superintendent  Abu Fattah said, "We have not started any work on the complaint land."  However, work on a prison reconstruction project at a cost of Tk 210 crore is underway.
