Allegation of extortion in VGD rice distribution

It has been alleged that during the distribution of Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) rice among the destitute women, Tk 20 from each beneficiary was collected in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh district.

During the distribution of 154 sacks of VGD on Sunday, bribes at the rate of Tk 20 was taken from 484 beneficiaries. 

Tetulia upazila’s Faizul’s wife Sahida and Alamgir’s wife Asma, “They took 20 taka from us while distributing the rice.” 

Morzina, wife of Hamidul of Kheki Dangi village and Mukta Begum, wife of Shariful of Khaltapara village said, “We were not given rice until we paid them 20 taka.”

All of them said that they have been charged Tk 10. They also said  that they used to pay 10 taka before, now they are paying 20 taka. 

After speaking with the Union Parishad Chairman Mohsinul Haque, on this regard, he said, “The money was taken for expenses. 

On the other hand, Upazila Women's Affairs Officer Karuna Kant Roy said on her mobile phone, “I am not aware of taking money.”  However, there is no instruction to take money. He said he would look into the matter as to why chairman took money.

When asked about this incident, Tetulia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sohag Chandra Saha, 39, said, “I have heard this from you. Now, I will inform this to chairman and take action subject to investigation.”
