‘All single railway lines to be transformed into double line’

Railway Minister Mohammad Nurul Islam Sujon on Monday said the government has taken initiative to transform all single line into  double line as most of the railway line of the country is single line.  

"Steps have been taken to transform all single line into double line in phases while country's most of the railway line is single," he said.  

The railway minister made this comment while Russian envoy in Bangladesh Alexander Vikentyevich Mantytskiy called on him at Rail Bhaban in the city.   

Sujon said, "Our railway is divided by the River of Jamuna-Broad-gauge is in western side and meter-gauge is in Eastern side-"all the railway lines will be transformed to broad-gauge in phases," he added.

Seeking Russian investment in the railway sector, the railway minister said Russian played significant role during the War of Independence and the country also recognized Bangladesh as an independent state after the liberation war.

Regarding the government investment in the sector, the minister said the Prime Minister has formed individual ministry in 2011 considering the demand of the people on the railway, adding that "The government begins investment in the sector since then."  

During the meeting, the railway minister said "we are looking for foreign investment in the railway sector. Many projects are now going on in the  railway and more new projects also will be taken in this service sector in future."   

Revealing implementation of master-plan in the railway sector, he said "procurement of new coaches, engines for the railway, newlines also are being constructed in the railway."

Construction and renovation of railway bridges and modernization of the signaling system also are going on in the sector, he said. Russia could be invested in these sectors including establishment of a joint training institute with Bangladesh, Sujon told the meeting.

Railway Ministry secretary M Selim Reza, Director General of Bangladesh Railway Direndra Nath Majumder, Third Secretary of the Russian High Commission, among others, attended the meeting.
