Members of the Hindu community staged demonstrations in the capital Dhaka and different parts of the country, demanding immediate action to safeguard their rights and security. The protest drew attention to the persistent concerns about the safety and treatment of minority communities in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, a prominent organisation advocating for the rights of the minority, issued an open letter to Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, detailing 205 incidents of persecution across 52 districts since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August. They stay up whole night guarding their homes and temples.
They demand that the administration ‘restore communal harmony in the country’. The open letter acknowledged Dr Yunus as a symbol of a new era, marked by significant student and public movements aimed at building an equal society.
However, it also expressed profound sorrow and concern over the violent actions of certain groups against minorities according to media reports. Ours is a country where all people irrespective of caste, creed, and religious affinity are living peacefully as communal harmony exists here.
Some vested elements are out
to create fresh religious discrimination
and unrest in the country
We also believe our country will reach its dream destination with united efforts of all communities. But some elements want to divide the country with communalism. In fact, they also want to make Bangladesh unstable and humiliate the spirit of recent students’ movement.
Some vested elements are out to create fresh religious discrimination and unrest in the country. Foolproof security measures must be taken across the country to avert any untoward incident during this tough time.
We think the evil forces are pampered by some elements at home and abroad which are acting against Bangladesh’s students’ movement that compelled the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government to step down.
Country’s people have confidence in Dr Muhammad Yunus that he (Dr Muhammad Yunus) will establish communal harmony and peace immediately.
We believe there will be no place for communal forces in our country which achieved independence through blood of people of all religions. And today, a non-communal Bangladesh will stand under the leadership of Dr Muhammad Yunus. Our country will be a unique example of communal harmony before the world.
We all must remain alert and should resist the evil forces together for the welfare of the country and its people. Those involved in destroying religious harmony must be brought to justice and no offender should be spared. People imbued with the spirit of our brave students’ movement must get united against those who want to destroy the communal harmony in the country during this tough time.
