Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said that Bangladesh is a secular country and people of all faiths have the equal rights in the country.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, made the remarks at a discussion meeting on the occasion of the Victory Day.
Held at the Awami League’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue, Sheikh Hasina took part in the virtual discussion in the evening staying at her government residence ‘Ganabhaban’.
The discussion meeting was organised by Bangladesh Awami League on the occasion of the Victory Day, December 16, when the country achieved its victory in the Liberation War.
The Prime Minister, in her speech, said, “A question now has arisen over the sculpture of the Bangabandhu. I will say one thing, all Muslims and Hindus have taken part in the Liberation War in this country. Muslims and Hindus will live in this country with their own faiths and religions. We all must have to stay here for each other. Everyone has to be tolerant to any situation.
Referring to the government as the servant of the people, Sheikh Hasina said the Awami League came to power after 21 years of the barbarous killing of the Bangabandhu and the people realised that the government can work for the people, for the welfare of the people.
The Prime Minister said, “I will make our Bangladesh hunger-free. I will make every house lit with electricity. The government is taking steps so that 100 percent people get houses.”
Talking about the leaders of her party, Bangladesh Awami League, Sheikh Hasina said, “Work for people. Serve them. Serving people is the duty of Awami League. We are doing so. The Awami League stands by the people of the country.”
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that following in the footsteps of the Father of the Nation, Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in food.
“Today we have made Bangladesh a developing country. I have given a plan for the progress of Bangladesh in 2100”, she said.
She said, “UNESCO has announced an international award in the name of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman. This is our achievement.”
Urging everyone to remain vigilant against the corona virus, Sheikh Hasina said, "We have made arrangements for the vaccine to come. The deal is already made. Even then, everyone must abide by health rules”.
The Prime Minister concluded her speech with an advice to wear mask and stay safe.
ObaidulQuader, General Secretary of the party and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges delivered the introductory speech at the discussion. Joint Secretary and Information Minister Hasan Mahmud, Former Minister Begum MatiaChowdhury MP, Agriculture Minister Dr. AbdurRazzak, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and AbdurRahman among others spoke on the occasion.
The party's publicity and publication secretary, AbdusSobhanGolap conducted the discussion from the Ganabhaban.
