August 15 is upon us again. On this very day, some 45 years ago, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all his family members except Sheikh Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana were brutally murdered by a handful of coward army officers and their treacherous foot soldiers.

It is a great shame for us as a nation that we could not save a leader like him, who, if was allowed to rule for the next two decades, would have changed the course of history of the newly independent Bangladesh.

Those who killed Bangabandhu and his family members, today themselves have been inclined into the abyss of history. It is sad but true that some of the killers are still evading justice and roaming around scot-free.

Of the 12 convicts, five were hanged on Jan 28, 2010, one died of natural causes and six more were absconding. In last April, Abdul Majed, one of the six absconding convicts in the killing of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was executed at the Dhaka Central Jail. Five other killers of Bangabandhu and his family are still on the run. Hence, the government should take concrete actions to bring those evading killers of the Father of the Nation under justice.

If Bangabandhu was allowed to rule for the next two

decades, he would have changed the course of history

of the newly independent Bangladesh.

According to sources, among the five convicted killers, law enforcers have correct information about the whereabouts of only two convicts.

They have not had any update on the remaining assassins for years. It would not be an easy task for the present government to bring back the convicted fugitive killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the country as the government led by Khaleda Zia had patronised them [convicted killers of Bangabandhu] in such a manner that they settled down in different countries.

As a nation it is infuriating for us that still we have not been able to bring the killer of the Father of the Nation father under justice. Hence, we urge the government to put forth its best to bring the killers back from abroad.

Bangabandhu not only gave us a nation but also he injected us the dream for a prosperous nation. He is an icon of national unity. Throughout his life, Bangabandhu dreamed for a non-communal and democratic Bangladesh.

In this month of mourning, we urge all the people of this country to work unitedly to build a non-communal and exploitation-free democratic Bangladesh where people irrespective of creed and class will enjoy equal rights. Finally, remembering all the martyrs of 15 August with deep respect, we urge all the people of Bangladesh to work together to materialise the dream envisioned by Bangabandhu.
