All 298 newly-elected lawmakers of the 12th parliamentary election took oath of office. National Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath to newly elected members of parliament, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at an oath-taking ceremony at the parliament building.

Later, the 62 independent candidates who won national polls from their respective constituencies were sworn in. The Speaker also administered the oath to 11 MPs of Jatiya Party.

According to the Election Commission Gazette, Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina won 222 out of 298 seats, more than enough for her party to form a straight fourth five-year term government since January 2009, after earlier winning power for the first time in 1996-2001. The 62 independent and 11 Jatiya party candidates who won from their constituencies also took the oath.

Countrymen who elected lawmakers from their respective constituencies hope that their representatives (MPs) will fulfil commitments they gave before the poll. We think the power is a scope to serve the people.

It has been possible for them to achieve development in their respective constituencies as the democratic process continues by now since Awami League assumed office after winning 2008 general elections confronting many hurdles. They must serve the people and work hard to build developed, prosperous and Smart Bangladesh by 2041.

Therefore, the MPs’ first challenge is to uproot the arson terrorism and to build ‘Smart Bangladesh’. As there are five levels of local government system starting from city corporation, district, upazila, municipality and union, the lawmakers will have to consult with the city corporation and municipality mayors and zila parishad, upazila and union parishad chairmen before taking any development projects in their constituencies.

Apart from public representatives, the lawmakers will also have to engage deputy commissioners, upazila nirbahi officers and other government officials to frame a plan for going ahead keeping intact the status of a developing nation. With the combined efforts of all, we believe we will be able to build a hunger-poverty-free and developed ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by the Father of the Nation.

They must serve the people

and work hard

to build developed, prosperous and

Smart Bangladesh by 2041

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government has done everything with specific and farsighted plans. So, in the case of planning, lawmakers must always give priority to the people's welfare.

They should work tirelessly to provide better civic services.  Only timely and well-planned measures can bring smile to the faces of people

People expect that the lawmakers will stand always by  them during any crisis. The lawmakers will have to earn grassroots trust.  The power of people is the main strength to the lawmakers. Therefore, the lawmakers especially, who were elected from Awami League should keep in mind their party's polls manifesto for 2024 general election.

As a continuation of the past, this time, the Awami League has also unveiled an implementable election manifesto by setting specific targets.

The continuity of the long-term action plans announced in the 2008, 2014, and 2018 election manifestos have also been maintained in the twelfth election manifesto.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, who led her party to a thumping victory in the national elections on 7 January, will take her oath as prime minister for the fourth straight term and form her cabinet today (Thursday). We have noticed especially in the last three years when many foreign countries suffered a deep economic recession caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Russian-Ukraine war and Palestine-Israel conflict, Bangladesh tackled the situation with making the right decision and doing the right thing throughout the year.

Braving all sorts of hurdles and odds, the lawmakers will have to continue pulling the country towards development. People will start evaluating the performance and records of account of the lawmakers.

What they will do in the coming days and their performance and records of account will also be checked, cross checked and rechecked.

Apart from these, what role they will play from the very beginning of the fresh tenure will also be evaluated. Therefore, we believe the lawmakers will stay beside the people and execute their responsibilities and duties honestly, sincerely and transparently.

On the other hand, those, who will be engaged in making the government and the party controversial as well through their immoral, unethical and other offensive activities and indecent remarks, they will be isolated from grassroots people.
