21-member of Bangladesh Navy at the Bangladesh Naval Ship 'Bijoy' were injured in an explosion of a nearby explosive depot near the port of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Condition of one of the injured naval members is learnt to be critical, informed Rashedul Alam Khan, Assistant Director of Inter-Services Public Relations Department on Wednesday (Agu-5).
Rashedul Alam Khan further informed, 20 of the injured Naval staff were safe and one seriously injured member has been admitted to the Medical Centre of the American University of Beirut.
Other injured members were sent after the first aid to the Hamud Hospital through Helicopter and the ambulances under the supervision of UN Peace Mission UNIFIL. They are now free from danger.
ISPR said, Bangladesh Navy Headquarters is continuing a round the clock contact with the Navy Ship, UNIFIL headquarters and the Bangladeshi embassy in Beirut. UNIFIL Head of Mission, Force Commanders and Maritime Task Force Commanders were observing the overall situation minutely and have assured all cooperation in this connection.
The ship BNS Bijoy carrying peacekeepers of Bangladesh Navy under UNIFIL was kept anchored at Beirut in Lebanon.
News from Lebanon informed, on Tuesday evening (local time) Lebanon, capital of Beirut, was devastated when an explosive depot at Beirut exploded. Rescuers recovered 100-dead bodies from under the debris. More than 4,000 people injured in the exposition. The rescue operation is still continuing.
It is learnt, from 2010 last Bangladeshi Warship has been engaged in the UN Peacekeeping mission. At present, naval Warship Bijoy has been engaged in peacekeeping job as a member of Multinational Maritime Task Force in the Mediterranean.
The peacekeepers on the ship have been working with efficiently to check illegal intrusion of illegal arms and ammunition in Lebanon.
