Swedish chemist, inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel transformed his career into an enduring legacy of global significance. Well known for inventing dynamite, Nobel revolutionised industry and construction but faced severe criticism for the destructive potential of his creation. Determined to redefine his impact on the world, Nobel channeled his wealth into founding the Nobel Prizes, ensuring his name would forever be related with advancing humanity.

Nobel signed his will on November 27, 1895, donating 94 percent of his wealth—over 31 million Swedish kronor—to generate annual prizes for achievement in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.

These awards, free from distinctions of nationality, aimed to honour those whose contribution most greatly benefit humanity. Decision of Nobel may have been influenced by rumours of an untimely obituary labeling him ‘the merchant of death,’ encouraging his resolve to leave a legacy focused on progress and peace.

The Nobel Prizes have become the crucial symbol of excellence and service to humanity. However, the vision of Nobel left a capacity for interpretation. His call for a literary prize for work of an ‘ideal direction’ initially excluded renowned writers such as Tolstoy, although the norm has since evolved to celebrate diverse talents. Similarly, distinctions between scientific discovery and technological innovation have often favoured theoretical scientists over inventors.

The Economics Prize established by Sweden’s central bank in Nobel’s memory in 1968, added another dimension to his legacy, although it has sparked debate regarding its alignment with the original intent of Nobel.

Alfred Nobel’s journey from inventor to benefactor emphasises an enduring truth—true greatness lies not in what we create for ourselves, but in what we contribute to the world.

His Nobel Prizes remain a symbol of hope, inspiring innovation and peace in service of a better, more cohesive future.
