Several hundred people under the banner of 'Alem Ulama and Touhidi Janata, Rajshahi', attacked Prothom Alo office at Boalia Thana crossing in Rajshahi city on Monday and set fire to the signboard of the office.
Earlier, they took out a procession from Rajshahi Shaheb Bazar Zero point of the city around 1:45 pm on Monday and held a brief meeting in protest against the daily Prothom Alo and the Daily Star newspapers.
Later, the procession went in front of the Offices of the Prothom Alo crossing, tuned violent at one point, and burned several newspapers of Prothom Alo and the Daily Star. Later, they took down the signboard of the Prothom Alo Office and burnt it down. The agitated people of the procession were chanting various slogans against the two newspapers.
The processionists earlier held a brief meeting at the Zero Point where the speakers termed the Prothom Alo and the Daily Star as the 'main sponsors of the expansion of Indian imperialism'. They also condemned the police attack on the function of 'Jeafat' organised by Touhidi Janata in front of the Head Office of the Prothom Alo in Dhaka on Sunday.
However, the Prothom Alo office in Rajshahi was locked from the outside during the attack and police were also present on the spot during the occurrence. No local correspondent of the newspaper was injured in the incident.
