An alarming surge in the death of dolphins has caught the attention of the authorities concerned. According to a report published in this daily recently, eight dead dolphins were found floating in different places of the Kuakata beach last August. A 12-foot-long dolphin was found at the beginning of September.

Effective protection measures are needed to be taken immediately to save this playful marine creature, or else it will be difficult to protect marine mammals. Moreover, the balance of the marine environment will also be disturbed.

Sometimes fishermen catch rare species of fish, dolphins and other aquatic animals in their nets. To protect their nets, they sometimes hit them to cut their nets. After their death, these dead aquatic animals float to different places through the tidal water. Experts opine that, fishermen of the sea are unaware and do not have a good idea about dolphins, they kill them when caught in their nets. The fishermen need to be trained and given ideas about dolphins.

Government should take comprehensive measures to conserve nature. Training sessions for fishermen should be carried out which should be followed by stern laws so that fishermen don’t kill the dolphins. All the wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, marine parks, migratory routes of birds and marine animals etc. should be monitored closely and managed by the dedicated department so that no one can harm these wildlife resources.

Dolphin conservation also means conservation of fisheries and the presence of more dolphins in our water mean that our ecosystem is balanced. Therefore, government and other related authorities should go all out to save this precious species before it’s too late.
