Alarming surge in Covid deaths, infections

Bangladesh registered 54 more deaths from Covid-19 till 8am Monday. The total number of deaths has reached 13,172 with the latest figure.

The current positivity rate stands at 14.80 percent and the total positivity rate stands at 13.40 percent.

The country recorded 3,050 new infections in the meantime taking the total number of people infected to 829,972 according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday.

This is the highest number of deaths recorded in 35 days and highest number of infections recorded in 59 days.

The death rate now stands at 1.59 percent in the country, added the release.

The number of fatalities and infections has increased significantly compared to a day earlier. The country recorded 47 deaths and 2,436 infections on Sunday.

Among the 54 deceased, 39 were men, and 15 were women. Of the victims, 50 died in different hospitals across the country while four died at home.

Four of the deceased were from Chattogram division, 13 each from Dhaka and Rajshahi, seven from Khulna, five from Rangpur, one each from Mymensingh and Barishal divisions.

A total of 20,602 samples were tested across the country till 8am Monday. 

During this period 2,564 Covid-19 patients have recovered. Up until now, a total of 768,830 people have recovered from the virus and the recovery rate stands at 92.63 percent.

As of Monday, 3,820,587 people died of Covid-19 across the world and 176,764,688 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.
