Ruling Awami League candidates won Bogura-1 and Jashore-6 by-elections held on Tuesday. The party’s candidates Sahadara Mannan in Bogura-1 and Shahin Chakladar in Jashore-6 were unofficially declared elected by returning officers.
In Bogura, Shahdara Mannan, wife of former MP Abdul Mannan, was unofficially announced as winner with 1,45,966 votes. Her nearest candidate Yeasir Rahmatullah (Truck Symbol) bagged 1,263 votes.
Mahbub Alam Shah, senior officer of Bogura district election office, made the announcement on Tuesday night.
In Jashore, Shahin Chaklader to the Jashore-6 (Keshabpur) constituency had been elected MP unofficially defeating his nearest BNP nominated candidate Abul Hossain Azad who declared not to contest in the polls before voting day, with huge margin.
Returning Officer and Jashore district Senior Election Officer Md Humayun Kabir announced the results after counting the votes.
Shahin Chaklader, also Jashore district AL general secretary, bagged 1,24,003 votes while his rival Azad, also BNP’s central committee member, got 2,012 votes. Jatiya Party (JP) nominated candidate Habibur Rahman Habib, however, got 1,678 votes as the main opponent BNP nominated candidate stayed away of the election before voting day.
District Election Office sources said that Jashore-6 constituency formed a municipality and eleven unions of Keshabpur upazila. The total number of voters in this constituency is 2 lakh 3 thousand 18. Of these, 1 lakh 2 thousand 122 are male voters and 1 lakh 896 are female voters.
A total of 1 lakh 29 thousand 67 votes were cast. Of which 1 thousand 374 ballot papers were rejected. The number of polling stations was 79. A total of 79 presiding officers, 374 assistant presiding officers and 748 polling officers were engaged in these polling stations.
The constituency of Jashore-6 fell vacant following the death of ruling party lawmaker and former State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadeque on January 21 this year. The Election Commission announced the details of the by polls after declaring the seat vacant. The by polls was scheduled March 29 but it was postponed for March 21 due to coronavirus outbreak a week earlier.
