The ruling Awami League and its various affiliate bodies and associate organisations on Wednesday remained alert so that no untoward incident could take place centring a programme organised by BNP and some other like-minded parties.
According to sources, since a lot of incidents of violence and sabotage happened in the past during the anti-government programmes by the BNP, Jamaat and vested quarters, the ruling Awami League took a vigilant stand to check anti- state activities and save the life and property of the people.
The ruling party played such a watchful role of its own accord with a view to helping the government and the law-enforcing agencies to protect life and property of people.
Sources in the Awami League said in future, the party will remain vigilant against any kind of ill- motivated forces and the party's leaders and activists will continue such type of vigilant activities.
The party sources said that as part of the party decision, thousands of leaders, activists and supporters of the Awami League and its associate organisations took position at different strategic points in and around the capital city of Dhaka.
They were also seen vigilant at every unit of Ward and Thana level in the capital.
The party also held several rallies with thousands of the party men.
Awami League's Dhaka Metropolitan South-North, Jubo League and Chhatra League held at least five rallies in five areas of the capital to prevent any violence by BNP and its allied parties.
The party's Dhaka Metropolitan South unit held a rally in front of the Awami League's central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan North Unit of Awami League held a rally near Shah Ali Shrine in Mirpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of Jubo League held a rally at Central Shaheed Minar and North unit of Jubo League held a rally at Farmgate. The Central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League held a rally at Shahbagh area of the capital.
Besides, all the organisations took out processions and paraded different roads of the capital.
It should be mentioned that the BNP and some of its like-minded minor parties on Wednesday observed ‘Gano Obosthan’ as part of their anti-government movement in capital Dhaka.
It may be recalled that in the name of movement, the BNP, Jamaat and their allies earlier set various instances of sabotage. They killed hundreds of people through ‘arson terrorism’ in 2012. Hundreds of buses were burnt to ashes when several thousand people, including bus passengers, were burnt alive brutally.
Talking about the programmes of the Awami League, one of its organizing secretaries SM Kamal Hossain said, “Anybody has the right of carrying out movement. But, none has the right to carry out subversive acts and violence in the name of movement.”
“If anyone creates public sufferings, they will be resisted by the people of the country. No one will be allowed to create public nuisance. No one creating disorder will be allowed to stand on the road. Awami League leaders and activists will remain alert in the field”, he said.
Another organizing secretary Sujit Roy Nandi said, “In the past, we saw that BNP burnt people alive in the name of movement. Common people, teachers, intellectuals and Awami League leaders became victims of their barbaric acts.
“But this time BNP will not be given that scope again. Awami League, in support with the mass people of the country, is determined to protest and prevent the anarchy of BNP”, he added.
