The ruling Awami League (AL) and all of its associate and affiliated organisations will hold peace rallies across the country today to check violence and anarchy by BNP.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the programmes on Saturday while addressing a peace rally organised by the party at the South Gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the capital.
The announcement came shortly after BNP announced a countrywide hartal for today (Sunday) and unleashed atrocities in the capital’s Nayapaltan area during its rally programme on Saturday.
Obaidul Quader said a general strike is now a ‘blunt weapon’ and this will not work now.
“BNP is a party of murderous and terrorists. They have returned to their old look today,” he added.
At the peace rally programme, other leaders of the ruling party alleged that in the name of political programmes like rallies, BNP is carrying out atrocities in an attempt to thwart the upcoming 12th National Parliament elections.
The ruling party leaders also announced to check anarchy and fight terrorism unitedly.
AL organising secretary Mirza Azam said while BNP launched anarchy, the AL is holding peace rallies.
AL’s joint secretary AFM BahauddinNasim said being failed in hatching conspiracies, the BNP started killing police, launched attacks on the Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital and the residence of the Chief Justice in the capital.
He said none would be spared if anybody wants to create anarchy and takes attempt of thwarting the next general polls.
“We will stay on the streets and remain vigilant until the general election is completed”, he said.
It should be mentioned that centring the rally of BNP, the unruly activists of the party locked into clashes with law-enforcers, torched about 10 vehicles and ransacked many others. In their series of attacks, a police constable was killed and over a hundred of people, including over 40 police personnel sustained injuries.
They also went into rampage through attacking the Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital, the residence of the Chief Justice and many other business establishments.
The BNP is trying to forge a movement ousting the present Awami League government. The party is also demanding to form a caretaker government, which is undemocratic, unconstitutional and also rejected by the Supreme Court.
On the other hand, since there is a constitutional obligation of holding the next election by January, 2024, the Election Commission is preparing for holding the next general election in the first week of January.
