The ruling Awami League has decided to work to strengthen the organization at the grassroots alongside gaining election successes for representatives of various local government bodies.

As part of the move, the party high-command has also asked the leaders concerned to form committees of the party and its different associate bodies at the grassroot level through councils.

Senior leaders of the ruling party said, since the organisational activities had not got proper attention due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, the party will put additional attention in its reorganisation.

According to sources, elections to most of the municipalities and union parishads across the country will be held this year. The Election Commission has planned to hold several more local elections this year, including the Chattogram City Corporation and Narayanganj City Corporation. The ruling party will be vigilant so that the party discipline is not disturbed centring the elections.

Besides, the ruling party is keeping a close eye on the polls as the BNP is the main rival of the Awami League in the local level polls. Besides, the party has also made special plans to make the party candidate win in the local government elections by cashing in on the development activities of the government across the country.

Party sources said, as part of the party decision, a screening process has been launched to nominate qualified, dedicated and popular leaders, so that party candidates can win in local body elections by gaining public trust.

The party sources said, the Awami League is also preparing lists of the outsiders and intruders in the party alongside the corrupt and criminals, who are tarnishing the party image as well as leaving the honest and dedicated leaders in frustration.

They also said that the party will try to exclude these types of outsiders, intruders, corrupt and criminals from the party as well as not include them in the new committees.

Awami League presidium member Lt. Colonel (Retd.) Muhammad Farooq Khan said both the party activities and participation in elections are the part of the party’s continuous tasks.

“In the new year, construction of Padma Multipurpose Bridge, Metrorail and other mega development projects and development activities will have to be taken forward alongside tackling the COVID-19 pandemic”, he said.

Farooq Khan said, “Every year is challenging to us. Natural disasters are part of our nature. Besides, vested quarters always want to destabilise the country so we have to remain vigilant against conspiracy alongside keeping up the organisational activities.”

According to party sources, most of the associate bodies of the Awami League at the grassroots are being run with expired committees for years. Leaders of the expired committees at many places have built up strong syndicates. The Awami League wants to break these syndicates and prepare the ground for the next parliamentary elections and create a people-oriented leadership.

To this end, eight organisational teams were formed in eight divisions last year.

The party sources also said that it is thinking of making the Awami League the party of the mass people so that mass people join hands in resisting the conspiracies.
