The ruling Awami League is searching for candidates in the upcoming elections in the mayoral posts of Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation. “The government is committed to hold the poles in these two city corporations on due time with free, fair and impartial manner,” Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said on Wednesday.

Quader, also the Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Affairs, told reporters at his secretariat office in the capital. Asked about whether there is any change in candidate list in the city polls, the minister said, “We have a nomination board headed by Awami League president Sheikh Hasina for the purpose of selecting candidate in any elections. It is the matter concerned to the board. Now we are searching for candidates.”

The Election Commission has sought schedules from the government for holding elections in two city corporations, he said and continued as saying that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has left the matter to the commission. “We want to hold the polls in free and fair manner and also to win the polls. Ahead of the polls, councils of the two city units of AL already have been completed. Selection of new leaderships will make our organisation stronger,” he added.
