AL leader shot dead, demo staged

A local Awami League leader was shot dead and five others received bullet injuries at Jamchhari Mukhpara area in Bandarban on Saturday evening.  Being panicked by the gun attack, another man who witnessed the incident died of cardiac arrest.

The ruling Awami League and its front bodies demanded arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers. Expressing grave concern, CHT Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing MP also protested and condemned the incident. The deceased was identified as Bachnu Marma, 60, President of ward-7 AL unit, and Batkhai Marma, 63, of the area.

Shahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Bandarban Sadar Police Station said some unidentified miscreants opened fire indiscriminately at the area in the evening. Bachnu Marma died on the spot and five other people were injured. Out of panic, Bakhrai Marma suffered a cardiac arrest and died on the spot. The injured were taken to Sadar Hospital. They are undergoing treatment under the supervision of Bangladesh Army, said the OC.  

Kya Aung Pru, chairman of the local union parishad, said the incident sparked panic among the locals. Protesting the incident, AL and its front bodies arranged a demonstration rally in front of Bangabandhu Mukta Manch in Bandarban.  Speakers of the rally demanded arrest of the culprits and their exemplary punishment. They called upon the government to take stern action for stopping terrorism and extortion in the hills. 

Meanwhile, Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing MP in a statement said that a vested quarter is still active to thwart peace and ongoing development activities in the hill districts. The unruly force might be behind this heinous incident.
